3 tips to stay on top of things

Have you ever had that feeling that you spent hours sitting behind that desk but still didn’t get anything done?

In a society where entrepreneurship is a risk and being busy is a badge of honour, we feel like, if we’re not working 24/7, we are just lazy or not trying hard enough. As if we needed to be super busy to prove to the world and ourselves that we are serious about our entrepreneurial journey.

Having experienced 2 burnouts, I can tell you this is not a sustainable way of life. And yes, I did build an amazing business working like that but I found that you can’t run a successful and sustainable business if you’re not healthy.

Work smarter, not harder. Or should I say, work smarter, not longer. Because you have to work hard. Entrepreneurship isn’t easy, but let’s try to at least make the journey efficient.

So let me share with you the processes I put in place to make sure that EVERY hour I work is productive.

Assess your workload

  1. Make a list of all the task you need to get done on a regular basis to run your business.
  2. Monitor your week : I use an app on my laptop called Toggl. Thanks to this app, you know exactly how much time you spent on each task. Hep, I see you there, don’t try to be more efficient while monitoring yourself.
  3. Am I essential to do that task : can I delegate or can I automate it?

  1. Create procedures : be aware of the power of procedure. Even if you work for yourself, having procedures will help you be more consistent in your work. Not only it’s very good for the customer experience, but it will also make your life easier when will come the time to hire as you’ll be able to share it with your team
  2. Map out the procedures : write down what needs to get done for each task. Automate everything you can so you don’t have to do the same things all the time.
  3. Plan your quarter, month, week so you get an overview of what needs to be done in the short and long term.
  4. Assess your day : every night I assess myself to be aware of what I’ve done
  5. 3 tasks rule : Only focus on 3 major tasks a day. If you can do more, amazing. But don’t push yourself to hard by wanting to get too many tasks done in a day because you will end up not get anything done at all. That also allows you to deliver QUALITY work.

No distraction

Cut off all the distractions. Cut off social media notifications and keep it for your lunch break. If you really need to focus hard, you can even turn off your emails and slack and any distractive app.
Making sure you are focus on your work enables you to get a better idea of the time you take to get a task done and helps you organising your day and setting up the right price for your services.
I usually set 25 to 55min slots and get 5 or 10 minutes break in between to get a glass of water, to walk around or anything that enables you to quickly clear your mind.

Following this process really helps me running my business while still living a life that is aligned with who I am. Taking time for yourself is essential for every single person and we should not forget about it when starting or running our entrepreneurship journey.
